Portable Air-Stream Mast

After much talking about it, Machspeed, FireFox, Shadey and Myself decided to finally do it. We built a portable 6.5m Trailer Mounted Mast for Air-Stream.

The design is quite simple. It consists of:

  • 2 x 3.25m Sections of 50x3mm Alu Pipe
  • 4 x 6mm Wire Rope Guide Wires
  • 8 x 20L Water Drums
  • 1 x 6×4 Trailer

 

The purpose of this endevor was to connect the new ASLan loaction to the Air-Stream network. The gear used to do this was:

  • RB411AR – Single Mini-PCI Slot with Embedded Radio
  • Ubiquiti SR2
  • Ubiquiti SR9
  • Hills 13db 900MHz Yagi
  • Hills 19db 2.4GHz Parabolic Grid Antenna
  • Wifi Extreme Dicast Outdoor RB411 Outdoor Enclosure
  • 12v SLA Battery with PoE Injector

The testing went better than expected with the results indicating that it was viable to run both 2.4GHz and 900MHz to the location providing a high speed and stable link to the Air-Stream network.

The surprising thing encountered during the setup was the way in which the guide wires were attached was much better than expected. Using the 20L water drums worked really well. The guide wires were able to be easily moved and it was possible to tighten them enough that even in the wind the mast was exceptionally stable.
