dBi, dBm and mW?

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011
The terms dBi, dBm and mW are all measurements used when talking about wireless communications. The terms dBm and mW are used when talking about the output power of a transmitter or wireless interface. The term dBi is used when talking about the Gain of an antenna.

A quick little guide to the Atmel STK500 6pin in circuit programming header which features in most of my Atmel based projects.

This layout is compatible with the STK500 Programming board aswell as many AVRISP programmers.

Atmel Standard Reset Circuitry

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010
One very common thing to use when embedding a micro controller into to a project especially robotics projects is a reset switch. The ATMega family of micro controllers from Atmel have the luxury of a reset pin. However using this feature can pose problems, especially when used incorrectly.

Whilst working on a previous project i found that the program was resetting at random, i later found this was because the reset circuit was done incorrectly.

The following is the standard reset circuit that Atmel recommend using:

Basic Regulated Power Supply

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
The task often comes up where a project needs a quick simple regulated supply voltage, Most of the time this is from a battery to supply a microcontroller or various other logic circuitry. This is quick little circuit i use when efficiency is not important and up to 1.5A is needed.

This circuit uses the very popular LM7805 voltage regulator, while this is not a new regulator and most designers have used it at some point in time it still proves very useful. The basic circuit that i use is adapted and simplified from the datasheets. The following is the layout used:
